이렇다할 준비 없이 캐나다에 뚝 하고 떨어진 저는 고등학교 시절은 영어때문에 엄청 고생한 기억밖에 없습니다. T_T
내신으로 대학에 가는 캐나다의 교육 시스템에 따라 점수를 잘 따야하는데 영어라는 큰 걸림돌이 있으니 고등학교 생활을 즐긴다는 것은 제게 사치였던 것 같습니다.
시간이 지나고 나서야 지금에서야 그때 시간들을 되돌아보면 아쉬운 점들이 제법 많이 둥실둥실 떠오르지만 그때의 영어 실력으로 그때로 다시 돌아가라고 하면 쉽게 예쓰!라고 하지는 못할 것 같아요.
미국, 캐나다의 중고등학교에서는 영어 시간에 교과서 전문 교육회사가 발행하는 책을 사용하긴 하지만, 그와 별개로 따로 책을 구입하여 읽도록 합니다. 한국의 국어시간에서 배우는 모든 글들은 국어 교과서 안에 포함된 것과 다른 모습이지요.
고등학교에 들어가기 전, 중학교에서는 본격적으로 서서히 호흡이 긴 글들을 통해 독해, 이해, 그리고 생각하는 능력을 기르고 비판적인 사고가 필수적 요소인 글(에세이)을 잘 쓰는 연습을 한다고 해요. 그렇기에 미국의 중학교 영어시간에 쓰이는 책들을 보면 일반 소설보다는 비교적 쉽게 읽히는 글들일 지언정, 절대 내용은 가볍지 않은 것들이 많은 듯 해요.
영어시간에 어떤 책들을 읽느냐에 관한 것은, 지역마다 학교마다 그리고 교사들의 개개인의 선택마다 차이가 있긴 합니다. 인터넷을 찾아보면 교사들끼리 서로 책을 추천하는 이야기를 나누는 공간도 있더라구요.
