2020년의 키워드, 올 해의 단어(Word of the Year)들은 어떤게 있을까

 

 

 

'연말'이라는 단어가 공기중을 진하게 맴도는 이 맘 때쯤의 시간이 되면 으례 지나온 한 해의 시간을 책갈피를 펼치듯 곱씹어보고 되내어보게되는 듯 하다. 아쉽고 안타까운 시간이 어디 있을까 싶지만 멀지 않은 훗날에 역사책에 기록될 만한 굵직한 일들이 찌인하게 훑고 간 한 해 였는지라, 그냥 다 좋았다고 다 예뻤다고 하기에는 조금은 억울하고 속상한 부분이 조금은 더 크게 남는 느낌.

 

하루 하루, 딱 하루치의 벽돌을 굽는 느낌으로 그렇게 살았는데 모든 것이 다 좋았다고 아름다웠다고 덮어버리기엔 나의 수고를 내가 스스로 무시해버리는 것 같은 느낌이 들어서인가보다, 아마. 

 

매년 연말이 되면 그 해, 가장 핫했던 이슈들을 골라 올해의 단어를 선정하는 미리엄-웹스터 사전(Merriam-Webster Dictionary /www.meriam-webster.com). 얼마 전, 올 해, 2020년의 단어들을 선정해 발표했다.

 

2020년 한 해를 대표하는 단어들로 다시금 되돌아보는 지난 시간.

#1. Coronavirus

 

 

전문 의학 용어가 대중의 일상적인 단어로 확장되는 경우는 매우 드문 일인데, '코로나바이러스(coronavirus)'는 불과 몇 주 만에 보편적인 단어가 우리 곁에 자리잡았다. 1월 20일, 미국에 첫번째 코로나바이러스 환자가 확진을 받으면서 순식간에 핫 한 단어로 떠올랐다. 2019년에 비해 162,551% 상승한 검색량을 기록했다. 또한 “coronavirus disease 2019”의 약자인 COVID-19은 등장한 지 34일만에 가장 빨리 사전에 등재되었다.

 

"A coronavirus is an RNA virus that was given its name in 1968 by a group of research virologists who noticed that, under a microscope, the virus resembled a solar corona visible during an eclipse (corona is the Latin word for “crown”). Both SARS and MERS are examples of coronaviruses."

#2. Defund

 

(동사): …의 재원을 고갈시키다; 재정 원조를 철회하다

 

흑인 조지 플로이드가 백인 경찰의 과잉진압으로 사망하는 사건이 터지면서 경찰들을 위한 예산을 철회해야한다는 문맥안에서 널리 사용되었다. 

 

Protests in response to the killing of Black people by police officers punctuated the year, and a word from those protests rose in lookups beginning in June: defund. The word was key in the many conversations about how to address police violence, as activists called for the defunding of police forces, and others tried to understand what that in practicality would mean. Overall, defund was looked up 6,059% more in 2020 than in 2019.

We define defund as “to withdraw funding from.” The word is a recent addition to English, in use only since the middle of the 20th century.

#3. Mamba

 

미국 농구계 NBA의 큰 별, 코비 브라이언트(Kobe Bryant)가 그의 딸 지아나 양과 다른 승객 8명과 함께 헬리콥터 추락 사고로 사망하는 사건이 일어났다. 갑작스러운 그의 소식에 농구계는 물론 사회 각층이 그의 죽음을 진심으로 애도하고 슬퍼했다. '맘바'는 코비 브라이언트를 대표하는 그의 별명. 원뜻은 아프리카산 독사를 뜻한다. 유독 잽싼 움직임과 맹독으로 널리 알려져있다. 코비 브라이언트는 스스로를 이 맘바 뱀에 비유했다. 더 빨리, 더 높이 뛰고싶은 그의 열망이 오롯이 길들여있는 별명이었다. 

 

Mamba refers to “any of several chiefly arboreal venomous green or black elapid snakes (genus Dendroaspis) of sub-Saharan Africa,” and comes from the Zulu word imamba. The black mamba in particular is very fast, and very deadly.

#4. Kraken

 

(명사): 노르웨이 앞바다에 나타난다고 하는 전설적인 괴물

 

2021~2021 시즌부터 NHL 서부 컨퍼런스 퍼시픽 디비전에 소속될 예정인 시애틀 프로 아이스하키팀의 명칭이
‘크라켄’으로 결정되면서 많은 사람들의 검색이 이어졌다. 18세기부터 쓰인, 스칸디나비아 지역에 출몰한다고 전해지는 신비한 바다 동물을 뜻한다. 인터넷 용어(밈)으로 "Release the Kraken"이라는 표현도 많이 쓰였는데 이는 2020년 대선에서 트럼프 대통령을 지지하는 표 들이 의도적으로 사라졌다고 주장하는 시드니 파웰(Sidney Powell)이 말하면서 유명해졌다. 

 

A kraken is a mythical Scandinavian sea monster; the word, which comes from Norwegian dialect, has been used in English since the middle of the 18th century. Krakens have featured in various contexts more familiar to English speakers than Scandinavian folklore, including various iterations of krakens in Marvel comics and a memorable monster in “Clash of the Titans.” ... November, when lawyer Sidney Powell said she would “release the Kraken,” which in this case meant to present evidence that votes for President Donald Trump had been deleted. No evidence has been put forth, and the Department of Homeland Security has described the 2020 presidential election as “the most secure in American history.

#5. Quarantine

 

(명사/동사): (전염병 확산을 막기 위한 동물,사람간의) 격리, 혹은 그러한 행동

 

코로나로 인해 사회적 거리두기(social distancing, physical distancing), 그리고 자가격리 (quarantine)가 자연스럽게 화두로 이어지면서 뜨게 된 단어. 2019년에 비해 무려 검색량이 1.856% 증가!

 

Quarantine means “a state of enforced isolation designed to prevent the spread of disease.”... As with pandemic, there was interest in this word before the stay-at-home orders became a reality in the U.S., with February’s reports of outbreaks on cruise ships in early February in the news triggering lookups. Quarantine was looked up 1,856% more frequently in 2020 than in 2019.

#6. Antebellum

(형용사): (특히 미국 남북) 전쟁 전의

 

총 두번의 이유로 이 단어의 검색량이 기하학적으로 증가했다. 첫번째는 지난 6월, 굵직한 상들을 받으며 유명해진 컨트리 음악 그룹이 그들의 그룹명을 "Lady Antebellum”에서 "Lady A”로 바꾸겠다는 발표가 그 이유였다. 따른 하나는 9월, "Antebellum” 이라는 타이틀의 영화가 개봉했던 일. 이 두가지 이유로 이 단어는 작년에 비해 885%의 검색량 증가를 기록했다. 

 

Antebellum comes from Latin ante bellum, meaning “before the war.” We define the English word in a two-part definition: the word can mean simply “existing before a war,” but it is especially used to specifically mean “existing before the American Civil War.

#7. Schadenfreude

 

(멍사): 남의 불행에 대해 갖는 쾌감

 

철자도 철자지만 발음하기도 너무 어려운 이 단어. '샤던프로이더(SHAH-dun-froy-duh)'라고 읽는다고 한다. 독일어에서 파생한 단어. 

 

지난 10월, 미국의 트럼프 대통령이 코로나에 걸렸다는 것이 발표되면서 그간의 그의 불같은 언행들을 언짢게 여겼던 미국의 일부 시민들은 통쾌함을 느꼈다는데, 이를 반영한 미국의 일간지 USA Today가 다음과 같이 헤드라인을 뽑으면서 유명해졌다: " President Donald Trump's coronavirus infection draws international sympathy and a degree of schadenfreude"

 

Schadenfreude belongs to a class of German borrowings that highlight that language’s penchant for referring to complex ideas in a single, though lengthy, compound word. It comes from Schaden, meaning “damage,” and Freude, meaning “joy.”

#8. Asymptomatic

(형용사): 증상이 없는

 

코로나가 확진되면서 무증상자를 뜻하는데 있어 사용되었다. "a-"접두사는 "없는/아닌"이라는 부정적인 뜻을 가진다.

(형용사,부사): 상관없이(규칙을 잘 지키는 사람이나 부유층 아이들에게 거부 반응을 일으키는 'regardless'의 비표준적인 표현)

 

갑자기 쌩뚱맞아 보이는 이 단어는 사실 조금은 엉뚱한 이유로 올해의 단어 리스트에 포함되었다. 미국의 배우 제이미 리 커티스(Jamie Lee Curtis)가 그의 트위터에서 미리엄-웹스터 사전이 올해가 되어서야 이 단어를 포함했다고, 올해는 정말 나쁜 해라면서 트윗하면서 검색량이 높아졌다. 미리엄-웹스터 측에 의하면 이는 사실이 아니고 1934년에 이미 기재되었다고 설명했다.

루스 베이더 긴즈버그(Ruth Bader Ginsburg) 미국 연방 대법원의 대법관이 지난 9월, 췌장암으로 향년 87세로 사망하면서 이 단어가 떠올랐다. 매우 강한 진보적 성향을 보였던 그녀는 미국 역사상 두 번째 여성 연방대법관이었다.

(멍사): (비격식) 허튼소리, 허튼수작

 

대선토론에서 존 바이든이 이 단어를 여러번 쓰면서 유명해졌다. 아일랜드쪽에서 유래한 고어이기 때문에 이 단어를 자주 쓰는 바이든의 이미지에 "옛날 스타일의 아일랜드-미국인"이라는 인식을 심어주는 데 한 몫 했다.
